Join librarian Meredith to discuss Peter Geye's novel Wintering, a story of family secrets and winter survival set in the Minnesota Boundary Waters!
One day, elderly, demented Harry Eide steps out of his sickbed and disappears into the brutal, unforgiving Minnesota wilderness that surrounds his hometown of Gunflint.
It's not the first time Harry has vanished. He’d done this once before, thirty-some years earlier, in 1963, fleeing a crumbling marriage and bringing along Gustav, his eighteen-year-old son, pitching this audacious, potentially fatal scheme to him—winter already coming on, in these woods, on these waters—as a reenactment of the ancient voyageurs’ journeys of discovery.
It's certainly a journey Gus has never forgotten.
With Harry gone for the second time and unable to survive the woods he'd once braved, his son Gus, now grown, sets out to relate the story of their first disappearance--bears and ice floes and all--to Berit Lovig, an old woman who shares a special, if turbulent, bond with Harry.
Wintering is a thrilling adventure story wrapped in the deep, dark history of a rural town.
Copies of the book will be available at the library for checkout, or patrons may order a copy through the library's online catalog, Infosoup.
Book Group, the Scandinavia Public Library's book discussion group, meets at 4 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every month except December. Our discussions are open to anyone who has read the month's selected title and will participate in a civil manner. Readers are welcome to attend as many meetings as their interest and schedules permit. We read a wide variety of books, covering all genres, as well as occasional non-fiction titles. Titles are selected by our staff, but we also welcome suggestions from our readers!
