2018 Summer Programs

The Scandinavia Public Library's summer program is a fun way to include reading and related activities in summer family time. It helps children, 'tweens, teens, and adults maintain and improve reading and learning skills. The summer library program has two parts, a reading program and an activities program.


Summer Reading Program

​Pick up a reading record at the front desk the next time you visit the library. Read at least 20 minutes per day for the next two weeks. Each day you read at least 20 minutes, mark off one box on the reading record. After two weeks, return the form to the library to be entered in a drawing to win a pair of gift certificates to area businesses. (At least one box must be filled to enter.)

Drawings will be held: June 23, July 7, July 21, Aug. 4, and Aug. 18.

Gift certificates provided by: Little Norway, Scandinavia Co-op/Cenex, ScandiHus, Silver Lake Lanes, Trout Bum Bakery

Only one entry per drawing. The Scandinavia Public Library will choose which two gift certificates will be awarded each week. Entrants do not need to be present to win.

When individuals age 17 and under turn in a reading record, they may select one of the following items… (While supplies last. Additional limitations may apply. Only one item per Reading Challenge semi-weekly drawing period.)

  • A free book from our Scholastic book shelf
  • A free book from our donation book shelves
  • Two trading cards
  • An item from the library treasure chest
  • A coupon for a free, Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizza (limit one per person)
  • A coupon for one free ride at the Waupaca County Fair, August 21-26, 2018 (coupons available in August; limit one per person)


Rock Your Reading Grand Prize Drawings

Do you need to be rocked out of a reading rut? Expand your reading world with the suggestions listed at the bottom of your reading record. Check off any that you try. Each suggestion tried will earn you one entry in a Grand Prize drawing taking place during our End of Summer Ice Cream Social on Saturday, August 25. Entrants do not need to be present to win.

Age 5 & under: HappyFishes Xylophone with music cards
Ages 6-11: National Geographic Geode & Crystal Kit
Ages 12-17: 4M Crystal Growing Kit
Adults 18 & up: Library T-shirt and cloth book bag, and a $15 ScandiHus gift certificate


Additional Reading Programs

1,000 Books before Kindergarten: 

This year-round program encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before he or she enters school, a goal experts say children need to help them learn to read for themselves. One of the best ways to encourage learning is to spend time sharing books every day. Sign up at the library today!

Book Group: 

The Scandinavia Public Library chooses a book monthly (except for December) to read and discuss as a group on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. Selections vary widely and readers are welcome to participate as frequently as they choose. This summer's books include:


Summer Activities Program

The Scandinavia Public Library offers a variety of programs throughout the summer for all ages. Check individual listings on our website's calendar to learn more about each week's programs! Our programs are open to everyone who participates in an age-appropriate manner and is a good role model for younger people.

Tuesday, July 24 at 2 p.m. This event takes place at the Iola Village Library.

Prepare to be wowed with science as educator Mark Janssen presents his amazing and infectiously enthusiastic show featuring exploding paint cans, a bed of nails, and a frozen banana hammer!

Saturday, August 25 from 11 a.m. until noon.

All ages.

Enjoy the harmonious sounds of the barbershop quartet Regal Blend while you eat an ice cream sundae served up by library staff. Our summer reading program Grand Prize winners will be announced at this event!

Ages 4-8

Stories, songs and activities for children and their families. Older siblings are welcome!

Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. until noon.

Ages 4 through adult (Younger children should be accompanied by a responsible caregiver.)

Crafts and activities: art, music, science, coding. No matter your age, we’ll have something fun for you to do every week! Ask at the front desk, or check this website or our Facebook page for weekly details.

Thursday mornings all year from 10:00 a.m. until noon.

Ages 11 and up (10 & under welcome if accompanied by a responsible caregiver.)

Bring your own project to work on at the library. All skill levels are welcome, and assistance is available for a wide variety of crafts.


Dragon Color.pngMonster Mondays

June 25 and July 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 from 2-5 p.m. 

Ages 11 through adult

Have you ever wanted to play Dungeons & Dragons? Join librarian Meredith on an introductory adventure! The first meeting will provide a game overview and some practice play, with the campaign taking place through July. Spectators welcome! 


Tree Color.pngStory Walk in Jorgens Park Preserve

April into November.

All ages

Walk a 0.4 mile loop trail beginning and ending just east of the picnic pavilion. As you walk you’ll read pages from a children’s picture book placed along the trail. It’s a great way to combine literacy and outdoor activity!
